Kalkaska County, Michigan - 1986 cougar sighting.
Reported Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 2:37 PM to www.savethecougar.org
Date of Observation: May 1986
Time: 9:00 am
County: Kalkaska
Location Description: Highway M-72, about 8 miles east of Kalkaska. Between Sigma and Baker roads. T27N R6W Sec22
Sighting Description:
While working for the DNR wildlife divison enroute to a clearcut site off Sigma road near Kalkaska, this cougar leaped across M-72 in what seemed like 2 jumps, approximately 1/8 mile in front of the truck. It was unmistakable, especially the long tail and tawny color. I turned to my co-worker and said "Was that what I think it is?" (He said pretty much the same thing at the same time.) We pulled over and looked for it, but it disappeared into the woods. There were no tracks visible, since it was just a gravel shoulder, and tall grass near the road. When we later told other co-workers and friends they just laughed. |
