Mason County, Michigan - Hunter sights large dark felid.
Reported Nov 7, 2009 at 2:24 AM to www.savethecougar.org
Date of Observation: 11-1-2009
Time: 5:30-6:00pm
County: Mason
Location Description: Between Ludington and Manistee off 31.
Sighting Description:
Was sitting in a treestand scouting for upcoming gun season. My son noticed 4 deer standing around my throw down blind we had just set up that day out in an open area. I took the binoculors and watched them for about 2 or 3 minutes. As I was watching 3 of the deer were behind blind and one was 40 yards in front of blind. All the sudden in the high brush I see what looked like a long dark colored back of a shorthaired cat. It was almost black in color. It looked to be low crawling. I never seen the head or tail though. All the sudden the front deer took off into a corn field and 1 of the back deer went left while the other 2 went right. The deer ran into a recently taken down corn field at a 180 degree circle and the 1 deer met back with the other 2 and took off. Whatever the animal was, it's back was long. I have owned some very large domestic cats 35# ones and never this long of a back. I lived in Colorado mountains for a couple years and it looked like a mountain lions back but only alot darker in color almost seemed like a brindle boxer color. |
