|Charlevoix County, Michigan - cougar sighting.
Reported Sun, Sep 18, 2011 at 1:52 PM to www.savethecougar.org
Date of Observation: 9-18-11
Time: 11:30 a.m.
Location Description: Phelps Road about 1/4 mile east of Blanchard
I was walking with my dog (she was on leash) west on Phelps in a wooded area when I spotted a very large animal sitting on the other side of the road. It was facing the woods and sitting upright. At first I thought it was a large bobcat but When I was about 25 feet from it I saw that it had a smooth grayish coat and a longer tail. Tail was ringed. It turned to look at me and I saw the white on the face. It stood and I saw that it had long legs. It was very sleek and about the size of my 60 pound lab mix, but slimmer. After it gazed at me foraging 5 seconds it turned back and slunk into the woods. I saw a full size cougar in Antrim county about 6 years ago and this animal was much smaller which is why I initially thought bobcat. Now I believe it was a large cub. It was clearly not afraid of me or of my dog. My dog did not bark but it is not her nature to bark at any animal unless it enters our yard.
